Multipoint Thermometers

Multipoint thermometers are temperature profiling assemblies that incorporate multiple RTD and/or thermocouple sensing points along a single mechanical carrier, enabling a detailed temperature gradient to be measured within a vessel or along a vertical or horizontal section. They are applied in critical services - including low- to high-pressure reactors and storage tanks - where point measurement is insufficient to capture hot spots, stratification, or catalyst-bed behavior.

By providing a temperature profile rather than a single value, multipoint assemblies support tighter process control and improved operating margins. The measured gradient can be used to optimize reaction conditions, detect abnormal thermal behavior earlier, and validate mixing and heat-transfer performance. These assemblies are commonly engineered to specification to improve availability, efficiency, and safety by enabling optimized control informed by detailed profiles.

Portfolio architectures include 3D-customizable flexible sensor solutions that may be used with or without a thermowell, linear sensor arrays with a primary thermowell, rope- or conduit-based bundles suited to tanks and silos, and minimally invasive profiling concepts for constrained penetrations. Options may include installation with or without a temperature transmitter and the use of RTD or TC sensors, including specialized profiling sensor technologies.

For high-consequence services, diagnostic features can add a second layer of protection and insight. Multipoint assemblies may be offered with a diagnostic chamber that helps contain potential process leakage and provides additional data that supports analysis of leakage events, timely countermeasures, and predictive maintenance. Flexible designs with replaceable parts can improve maintenance options and reduce downtime, especially in configurations with or without thermowells.

Typical applications include hydrocarbon processing and petrochemical reactors, catalyst beds, chemical reactors requiring temperature uniformity verification, and large storage vessels where stratification must be monitored. They are also used in silos and tanks where rope-style sensor bundles can be deployed to track gradients for quality control or safety monitoring (e.g., self-heating materials).
