Optical Analysis

Optical analysis comprises atomic and molecular measurement techniques that use light–matter interactions to identify and quantify composition in solids, liquids, slurries, particles, and gases. In practice, these systems extend process analysis beyond conventional electrochemical sensors by providing fast, selective measurements for quality control, process optimization, and emissions monitoring. Endress+Hauser’s optical analysis offerings span laboratory, process, and continuous emissions monitoring use cases. 

The technology set includes key extractive and in-situ approaches such as tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), quenched fluorescence (QF), and Raman spectroscopy, along with NIR, IR, UV/Vis, and atomic absorption techniques. Each method is selected based on target species, required response time, sampling strategy, and the tolerance for dust, moisture, temperature, and pressure effects in the measurement path. 

Benefits of optical analysis are tied to transparency and speed. Measurements delivered in seconds or minutes support tighter control and faster detection of abnormal conditions, minimizing downtime and avoiding off-spec production. Inline, non-invasive measurement reduces sample handling and preparation, improving safety and supporting repeatable results with minimal disruption to the process stream.

Typical applications include process gas analysis (e.g., key contaminants and moisture), combustion and utility optimization, and real-time product quality verification in chemical and life-science production. In solids and slurries, optical techniques can support concentration, composition, or particle-related monitoring where sampling is difficult or where rapid feedback improves control. For environmental compliance, emissions monitoring solutions are used to analyze and document gas concentrations so that mitigation actions can be targeted and verifiable.

Implementation depends on choosing the right measurement geometry—extractive versus in-situ, cross-duct versus probe, or inline optical cell—along with appropriate purge, window management, and calibration strategies. Well-designed systems emphasize maintainability and plant availability through straightforward operation and service access, enabling dependable long-term monitoring in harsh industrial environments.
