Level measurement addresses the continuous and point-level determination of material height, interface, and in some cases density within vessels and storage systems. It is applied to liquids, pastes, bulk solids, and liquefied gases in tanks, silos, hoppers, and mobile containers where inventory visibility and safe operation depend on dependable sensing. Free-space radar level measurement is often selected for non-contact operation, challenging vapors, and long measuring ranges; guided radar excels when a defined signal path is required or where foam and turbulence are present. Ultrasonic measurement provides a non-contact option in many utility services, while capacitance and conductive techniques are frequently used for point detection in suitable media. Hydrostatic (pressure-based) methods are widely applied in liquids, and radiometric measurement supports extreme conditions where other principles are impractical. Vibronic point level detection, float switches, paddle switches, servo, electromechanical, and microwave barrier solutions round out the toolkit for specialized bulk and safety applications.

Benefits are realized directly at the measurement point: stable level control improves product quality and throughput; reliable high-level alarms support overfill prevention; and low-level detection protects pumps, agitators, and dry-running equipment. Accurate inventory and interface measurement also reduces uncertainty in custody and internal accounting, enabling tighter scheduling of receipts, transfers, and production campaigns.

Typical applications span bulk storage and tank farms, blending and dosing vessels, separators and settlers, reactors, evaporators, CIP tanks, and wastewater basins. In solids handling, point level detection is used for bin empty/full status, conveyor transfer points, and dust-collection systems; in liquefied-gas and pressurized services, non-contact radar or pressure-based solutions are often paired with appropriate approvals and mechanical designs.

Long-term performance depends on mounting location, nozzle and stilling-well effects, process connections, and the handling of temperature and pressure excursions. Standard communication interfaces, diagnostics, and documentation practices simplify commissioning and support consistent maintenance and proof testing, particularly where level is part of a safety instrumented function.
