Gateways and modems are system components that provide efficient access to field-device and network data, bridging the gap between instrument-level protocols and engineering or maintenance tools. A modem focuses on protocol conversion (for example HART/USB or FOUNDATION Fieldbus/Bluetooth) and is typically used with a handheld configurator or a computer for direct device interaction. A gateway extends the concept by providing a parallel network access point for device configuration software and browser-based views, often adding network and device status functions beyond simple conversion.
Functionally, these components translate field-side communication into interfaces suitable for software applications. Modems provide point-to-point connectivity - field device on one side and, depending on the modem type, a USB port or Bluetooth wireless interface on the other - so configuration tools can communicate directly with an instrument. Gateways operate at the system level by connecting a computer’s Ethernet interface to the fieldbus network, allowing device configuration software or a standard web browser to manage access to devices across the segment.
The benefits are realized as reduced access friction and improved visibility. Simple connection methods accelerate commissioning and device replacement workflows, while gateways add capabilities such as network and device status monitoring, concise device diagnostics aligned to NAMUR NE 107, and remote monitoring/maintenance via a standard web browser. These functions support faster fault isolation and more consistent interpretation of device health across a networked installed base.
Typical applications include configuration and diagnostics of HART and fieldbus instruments from control cabinets, instrument rooms, or remote engineering workstations; asset monitoring in networks where a non-intrusive parallel access point is needed; and staged commissioning of skids or packaged units where multiple devices must be accessed through a single entry point. Endress+Hauser examples include architectures where Fieldgate devices (e.g., SFG500 with the SFM500 module) support advanced status monitoring of intelligent devices on a PROFIBUS network. Selection criteria often include protocol coverage, physical topology (point-to-point vs network), and how diagnostic data will be exposed to higher-level systems.
