Extended pH Sensors & Transmitters
pH sensors and transmitters are foundational instruments for controlling acid/base chemistry, reaction performance, corrosion behavior, and product quality across water, chemical, and hygienic processes. Endress+Hauser emphasizes pH as a major share of quality-relevant measurement, driving the need for stable sensors, appropriate reference systems, and transmitters that support reliable conversion of electrochemical potential into accurate, temperature-compensated pH values.
The benefit of robust pH measurement is operational clarity at the point where many control decisions converge: neutralization, precipitation, disinfection efficacy, separation efficiency, and biochemical reaction windows are all pH-dependent. High-confidence pH values reduce chemical overshoot, minimize process excursions, and improve consistency of downstream parameters such as ORP behavior, scale formation tendency, and membrane or resin performance.
Sensor selection is application-specific. Glass electrodes are widely applied but require correct diaphragm and reference choices to manage fouling and drift. ISFET sensors are positioned where glass breakage is unacceptable or where high organic solvent content challenges conventional glass designs. Enamel sensors are applied where long-term stability and minimal maintenance are prioritized. The transmitter platform determines whether the measurement is single-parameter or multi-channel/multiparameter and how calibration practices are managed.
Supporting infrastructure is often decisive: assemblies for fixed, immersion, flow, and retractable installation enable correct sensor placement, cleaning access, and safe insertion/removal. Automated calibration, adjustment, and cleaning systems improve performance in challenging chemical and hygienic processes. Endress+Hauser also notes availability of pH buffers/standards and calibration solutions, including internally produced standards tied to accredited laboratory practices.
Typical applications include pH control in coagulation and softening, neutralization and precipitation in industrial wastewater, CIP chemical concentration support (in tandem with conductivity), fermentation and bioprocess control, power and utility water chemistry management, chemical reaction control, and hazardous-area processes where sensor selection and transmitter design must align with safety classifications.
