WirelessHART Solutions

WirelessHART solutions provide a flexible method of integrating additional measuring points into monitoring and automation systems without extending hardwired infrastructure. WirelessHART is positioned for applications that evolve over time - such as regularly expanding installations (e.g., well heads), mobile assets, and rotating or moving machinery - where new measurements must be added quickly. Because the networks are self-organizing, setup, integration, and commissioning effort can be minimized. Endress+Hauser’s adapter concept also enables WirelessHART communication to be added to existing 4…20 mA devices to extend their connectivity without wholesale replacement.

A typical WirelessHART architecture comprises a gateway connected to the monitoring system and up to 250 WirelessHART field devices. Adapters allow HART or even 4…20 mA devices to join the wireless network, and dedicated display modules can also be integrated where local indication is required. Instruments transmit measured values at defined intervals to the gateway, which collects the data and makes it available to the connected application. FieldCare device configuration software can be used to configure both the devices and the network.

Benefits focus on deployment agility and access. WirelessHART supports rapid and flexible installation, works well with moving and rotating equipment, and is suitable for changing or mobile installations. Wireless links can bridge physical obstacles and bring in difficult-to-access measuring points, while the ability to upgrade legacy technology protects existing investments. These attributes make WirelessHART a practical complement to wired instrumentation rather than a replacement for it.

Typical applications include brownfield expansions where conduit and cable routing are constrained, supplemental monitoring on tank farms and remote assets, temporary measurements during turnarounds, and condition monitoring of rotating equipment. Design considerations generally include gateway placement, update-rate requirements, integration of gateway outputs into DCS/SCADA or historians, and alignment of cybersecurity and access control with site policies. When engineered with realistic radio-path assumptions, WirelessHART becomes an efficient path to close measurement gaps and improve visibility in areas that are otherwise costly to instrument.
