Temperature
Thermometers and transmitters for the process industry.
Temperature
Temperature measurement instrumentation includes sensors, thermometers, transmitters, and associated mechanical components used to determine process temperature under industrial conditions. Endress+Hauser describes a complete assortment of temperature sensors and assemblies, including thermowells and a wide variety of process connections and accessories, supporting both industrial and hygienic applications. Because temperature is tightly coupled to safety, reaction kinetics, separation efficiency, and product properties, it remains a foundational measurement across the process industries.
Typical architectures pair an RTD or thermocouple sensing element with a transmitter that provides analog or digital output to the control system. Industrial installations often require a protective thermowell to enable sensor replacement without process interruption and to improve mechanical robustness; where feasible, direct immersion offers fast response. Non-invasive surface measurement is increasingly applied when penetration is undesirable, using advanced mounting concepts to improve heat transfer and reduce uncertainty.
Benefits are realized through higher plant availability, efficiency, and safety. Internationally tested and certified devices support metrology, hazardous-area, and functional-safety requirements, and broad protocol support enables seamless integration from analog loops to digital architectures. Low operating costs come from straightforward installation and maintenance concepts, long service life, and access to traceable, accredited calibrations that sustain confidence in measurement performance.
Typical applications include reactors and vessels, distillation and evaporation, heat exchangers, boilers and steam systems, and utilities such as hot water and thermal oil. In hygienic processing, temperature assemblies are used in product lines, fermentation, pasteurization, and CIP/SIP sequences where cleanability and documentation requirements are stringent. Multipoint thermometers support profiling in tall vessels and columns where gradients drive control decisions.
Successful deployment depends on matching the mechanical design to process stresses (vibration, flow-induced forces, abrasion, corrosion) and selecting the correct insertion length, response time, and thermowell design to avoid resonance and premature wear. Standardized configuration and documentation practices reduce commissioning variability and simplify lifecycle maintenance across multiple measurement points and plants.
