Extended Chlorine Sensors & Transmitters
Chlorine sensors and transmitters are analytical measurement systems used to control and document disinfection performance in water and related aqueous processes. The category includes sensors for free chlorine, total chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and free bromine, paired with transmitters and assemblies that condition the sample and provide stable, temperature-compensated signals for control and reporting.
Disinfection control is inherently a balance: insufficient residual can compromise microbiological safety, while excessive disinfectant increases corrosion potential, byproduct formation risk, and chemical cost. Continuous measurement supports regulation-aligned dosing and rapid detection of process deviations, enabling tighter control loops and more consistent residual management across changing flow, temperature, and demand conditions.
Many installations use amperometric measuring principles in which disinfectant species diffuse through a membrane and generate an electrochemical response proportional to concentration. For free chlorine, the speciation dependence on pH is commonly addressed through pH compensation within the measuring point and transmitter logic, improving residual accuracy under variable chemistry. Selection is application-driven: free chlorine for many drinking-water and hygienic applications; chlorine dioxide where pH independence and lower corrosivity are advantageous; total chlorine for residual indication; bromine for seawater-influenced systems.
Mechanical and hydraulic execution is as important as sensor selection. Flow assemblies provide controlled velocity, stable pressure, and proper placement for multi-parameter compensation; basin/channel mounting expands applicability for open systems. Endress+Hauser offerings also extend to pre-engineered disinfection monitoring panels that combine sensor, transmitter, assembly, and accessories into a compact measuring point concept.
Typical applications include drinking-water disinfection residual control, swimming pool dosing optimization, process and reuse water disinfection, cooling systems and towers, wash-water hygiene for packaged foods, desalination pretreatment (including avoiding interference with reverse osmosis), wastewater effluent residual verification, fish farming, and other seawater process streams where bromine-based disinfection is preferred.
